Search for your ancestors

Getting you started

To help get you on your way to tracing your Scottish ancestry, we've created two useful searches.

Our clan search searches the world's largest clan database, provided by Tartanweb, to match over 35,000 surnames against Scottish clans which they may be linked to, so it's the perfect way to find out if you have a little bit of Scot in you!  If you find a match with your surname, you'll see an informative history of the clan, a map to show where most of that clan would have come from originally, as well as a swatch of the clan tartan!

And remember, once you work out what clan your ancestors belonged to, you can buy a kilt in the tartan of that clan.  So what are you waiting for, try it now!

We have also linked up with Scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the official government source of genealogical data for Scotland, to allow you to run an initial search into the official 1881 census records.  If you think your ancestors were still in Scotland at that time and know their first name and surname, you can take the first step towards locating their listing in the 1881 census.  Once you've taken that first step, why not sign-up to our enewsletter to receive free credits to use on the pay-per-view Scotlandspeople website, where you can continue your search.

Try the 1881 census search now.
